As far back as I can remember I have enjoyed the art of collage. In my early days, it was the simple pleasure of cutting pictures from magazines, assembling them on construction paper, poster board or notebooks.
There are lots of things to LOVE about collage, but here are five of my favorites:
#1 Collage can be done with just about anything you have on hand so there is no need to invest a lot of money in supplies. The basic supplies: paper, scissors, pens, pencils and glue. Boom!
#2 Collage is simple and stress free. Cutting, tearing and gluing down random elements to create something totally new is fun and exciting. As someone who is “drawing” challenged, collage allows me to express myself creatively without the need for perfection.

#3 Creating collages can often lead you in many other directions, generating new ideas. One of my favorites thing to do with collage is to cut the finished piece into several smaller pieces. This is where amazing things happen…the result is smaller collages that are organic, unplanned and unique.
#4 Collage is a method of storytelling, which can be intentional or not. If you have ever scrapbooked, then you likely approached your layouts in a collage style. I know I was drawn to the idea of adding in papers, stamps, stickers and other elements to give the modern day scrapbook a more artistic feel.
#5 Collage is a great way to experiment with different shapes, colors, textures, themes and words, strengthening your abilities. The more you practice combining a variety of elements together, the easier it becomes and you will soon see a style unique to you emerge.
